Aiden Milligan (b.1992) is an emerging artist trained in Aberdeen at Gray's School of Art and now working from his studio in Glasgow, Scotland. Winner of the BP Fine Art Award and a prize-winner at the Royal Scottish Academy, Milligan has work in private collections across the UK and USA. An investable artist on New Blood Art, he was also featured with the Federation of British Artists within a group show of the most exciting emerging UK artists working with figuration in 2017.

He works across painting, printmaking, and drawing as a form of visual storytelling, playing off a balance of humour and horror to depict the everyday and his own environs of rural Scotland. The work borrows from the naïve but remains cynical of the times we live in; steeped in a rich history of Scottish folklore yet also placed perfectly amidst wider concerns of 'fake news' and misinformation. There is a liminality to the work that often contradicts itself, perhaps a reflection of what sets Scottish-ness aside from other nations is it's inescapable conflict of opposites, as is prevalent in the essence of Scottish literature and indeed storytelling. Catholic/ Protestant, Highlander/ Lowlander, Gaelic/ English, Celtic/ British, Independent/ Better Together; a never-ending push and pull of warring opposites within the same entity. Milligan's work does not escape this. He pertains that the role of the Artist is to act as a 'receiver', tapping into the deeper recesses of the everyday to draw upon the strange and contradictory. At it's core; the work is just a self-portrait.
